Charlemagne's father was Pepin III. His father was the king of the Franks, and the kingdom was passed on to Charlemagne and his brother, Carloman. Carloman ruled with him for 3 years, and then he suddenly died. The Franks lived in Aquitaine, which was most of Germany. They were Germanic and mostly Christian. Charlemagne conquered lots of Europe with the Papacy. The Papacy is the Church and the popes. He was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire on Christ mas day, 800 AD, by Pope Leo III. He also made schools to promote education. After he died, Charlemagne's son, Louis, was the emperor. Later, his three sons signed the Treaty of Verdun, which split up the Holy Roman Empire.
